Learning Moments: Making Service Special

Is there a difference between Customer Service and Service to a Customer? This month’s Learning Moments podcast discussion takes a curious look, but mostly stresses the importance of making your service SPECIAL everyday…EVERYDAY!
Listen carefully!
TRIPLE III TIME: STAR TREKING Public Workforce Management
This week’s TRIPLE III TIME message is my guest author article submission to the American Society For Public Administration PATIMES online news-piece. The article: STAR TREKING Public Workforce Management, recommends including exclusive wording in legislation which takes a “future-ish” position and strongly encourages flexibility, adaptability and yes…INNOVATION to stay more relative to current/future public service trends.
I hope you enjoy my thoughts and ideas.
TRIPLE III TIME: What’s The Best Evaluation?
For all of my professional career I have had a difficult time selecting and utilizing a personnel evaluation tool/system. There are so many “tried and true” examples of evaluations that measure, document and numerically rate employees from all levels of an organization or business. So why have I dodged the question of endorsing an evaluation? Well maybe a more interesting question would be: Why did you choose to develop and try out multiple hybrid methods of evaluating those that worked with you over the years?
Well my answer…right or wrong…is/was two-fold. First, I am a strong believer in the process of daily self-evaluation. Therefore, I tried to encourage the development of an organization-wide mindset of evaluating your own performance in a customized way everyday…EVERYDAY! The principle evaluation areas included but were not limited to:
- Teamwork development among co-workers
- Timely response to information requests or questions
- Being on time for work, meetings and reports
- Representing the agency as a true Ambassador
- Building on partnerships with people, businesses, organizations and the community
- Challenging old rules and procedures with new ideas for a better way
- Recommending and enacting ways to make the agency more SPECIAL to those needing our help
- Accepting responsibility for taking action…especially when it came under question
- Remaining progressively excited for change that was an everyday event
- Understanding and supporting the CAUSE of doing good work.
BOTTOMLINE: My choice for a great evaluation was one that focused on the future of what else we can/should do…rather than one that only measures the past and what we have already done.
P.S. My employees always did well on their evaluations.
TRIPLE III TIME: A Communications SUPPLY CHAIN?
Somehow it seems like the QUALITY of personal and business communications has never become more important everyday…EVERYDAY! Likewise, the challenges we face with regard to high level sources, volume and speed of communication have never been more intertwined. As a consultant/creative advisor to individuals and organizations, I continually stress that QUALITY communication overlaps/impacts everything. So this weeks TRIPLE III TIME message asks everyone to consider: A Communication SUPPLY CHAIN!
First, check out this simple diagram:

In order to be effective, I believe the communicator must decide where their message falls on the SUPPLY CHAIN. Are you just creating Awareness of an issue or asking for Action too? Determining where your message “fits” on the SUPPLY CHAIN will help in crafting it for clarity and timeliness. If you (the communicator) take a moment to deliberately consider where your message falls on the SUPPLY CHAIN, it will appropriately be more defined, targeted, and simplified. Too often time, energy and resources are wasted rehashing old or confused messages. Deciding early if your message is for Awareness…or an Action…or a general Response…or a Revised Action will enhance communication simplicity…and yes QUALITY!
Taking responsibility before and as you communicate to consider your message’s placement on the SUPPLY CHAIN is a leadership job! Don’t allow communication sources, volume and speed to confuse the QUALITY of your messages. Understandably, everyone has different communication styles. But if we could all use A Communication SUPPLY CHAIN as our common guide…I believe QUALITY would result.
TRIPLE III TIME: “Please Pass the Positive”

In the book Mavericks at Work by William C. Taylor and Polly Labarre, one quote that stands out is: “A solution is what results when you stop thinking about the problem.” So, although I know most of you were assuming I would be connecting Thanksgiving Day with the TRIPLE III TIME “Please Pass the Positive” message title ….but how about if we study the quote first.
Think about it. Even when you ask someone simply: “How is it going?” …how often do you hear primarily about a problem? I believe that unfortunately we bring up the negative first…and then problems take up the larger portion of any discussion. This bad habit also exists in every news cast and usually is the headline in most newspapers. Wouldn’t it be refreshing to hear a newsperson begin their program with: “Today insert school name reported 100% attendance for the fourth day in a row!” Or “We want to salute all of the US Navy sailors on the U.S. insert ship name who have been on an ocean assignment for over six (6) months…Thank you so much!” Starting with the positive…not the problems…just creates smiles.
So as you sit down at your Thanksgiving Day table, how about if you start a new tradition and ask everyone to first: “Please Pass the Positive”. And who knows, if we stop thinking so much about problems, positive solutions may show up before Christmas.
TRIPLE III TIME: “Not Perfect…But Perfectly Attempted”
Ok…for those that know me realize that this week is a National Holiday: Opening Day of Deer Hunting Season. Well of course that is an exaggeration…but because of my Dad’s legacy…it will always be a holiday to me. But this week’s TRIPLE III TIME message: “Not Perfect…But Perfectly Attempted” …is not specifically about the hunt. Rather it focuses on the importance of just going after the opportunity!
First, I have long preached that PERFECTION doesn’t exist. If that were the case we would still have black and white TVs, wall phones, and cars that only get 10 miles per gallon. Why…because back then that was perfection. Today I believe PURSUING PERFECTION is “where-the-action-is”! For all that I work with I advise and mentor the importance of NOT waiting for that perfect situation, but instead take advantage of whatever goal you are seeking and strongly seize the moment. In my consultant messaging I try to stress the high value gained in just trying a new approach and being an example-setter.
Today if you were to ask me to give everyone a solid example of a “Not Perfect”….But Perfectly Attempted” action…I would quickly return to this years hunt. My youngest son never worries about getting a buck that surpasses the biggest one his Dad has got. No his focus is making everything about the hunt: Location (hunting blind), Service (food plot), Timing (get up early), and Equipment (gun/bow/binoculars/hand warmer/etc.) is as perfect as it can be.
BOTTOMLINE: PURSUE PERFECTION and focus on Location, Service, Timing and Equipment in completing your day job. If you do, I believe you will find reward when following a “Not Perfect…But Perfectly Attempted” course of action.
Learning Moments: From the Other Side of the Desk

This month’s Learning Moments Podcast takes a few moments to reflect on the lost(?) art of simple communication from “The Other Side of the Desk”. As always, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
TRIPLE III TIME: What Do YOU Stand For?
Lately in my work to help individuals and organizations take quality progressive steps, answering questions like: “What do you do best?…What do people expect from you?”…or mostly: “What do YOU stand for?” became a reoccurring challenge. Now don’t misunderstand the issue! The people and groups are doing fine in their services/products arena…but in their attempt to be “everything to everyone” …they have lost their core identity. So this week’s TRIPLE III TIME message offers up a few ideas (yes a TOP 10) to help determine: “What do YOU stand for?”
- Are you the person who arrives to work early everyday to make sure the workplace is open and ready?
- Does everyone know that you are the one at the end of a meeting that always has one more question…just to make sure everyone is clear on objectives?
- Do you make sure that workplace looks new and “fresh” so customers feel that you are not selling “old news”?
- Are you the tough person…the “bean counter” that ensures you get what you are paying for?
- Are you the best “greeter” who welcomes customers, colleagues, suppliers and partners in person, on the phone or via email?
- Do you ensure that you/your workplace follows a “promise-made-promise-kept” customer service philosophy?
- Are you the person people inside and outside of your organization seek out to really talk about action and what should we do?
- Are you the innovator/creative person that pushes to find that “always a better way” option?
- Are you the one that encourages everyone to advertise and DO five things GREAT….rather than attempt to do twenty things half way?
- Are you the “second banana” in an organization that feels unappreciated…but is really recognized as the true “follow-through” person?
Please take some time to determine and maybe re-introduce YOUR core identifiers…and those that truly represent your organization. Because I believe it is really true…that if you don’t stand for something…you don’t stand for anything.

The John Deere tagline, “Nothing Runs Like a Deere” didn’t always exist. “Although the company has grown, it has always stayed true to its core values – integrity, quality, commitment, and innovation. This commitment is what distinguishes the company in such a competitive marketplace and drives higher levels of performance.” read more from The Legacy of the John Deere Tagline
TRIPLE III TIME: Organizational & Personal MOMENTUM
Most of the time when you hear the word momentum used it is somehow connected with sports. Whether it is an announcer highlighting when a basketball team goes on a 18-to-2 scoring run over its competition…or when a boxer wins a series of rounds and truly has his or her opponent “on-the-ropes”! But this TRIPLE III TIME message will stress that momentum is also something felt and experienced in the fields of organizational and personal development.
During my Director years I used to refer to momentum as the “Whatever I touch turns to gold” moments. For example, there were times when we were lucky enough to win a special grant…that we simultaneously (or soon after) sought and won another. Likewise, there were many situations that as we introduced a new, innovative approach in our world-of-work, our creative initiative often paved the way to one or two other fun, cool opportunities. In hindsight, at no time did I/our organization think about the developmental MOMENTUM our action brought forth. Rather our mindset was that these were just “the right things to do”.
BOTTOMLINE: Do not ever underestimate the existence and benefit of Organizational & Personal MOMENTUM. It begins with encouraging and building on a positive, progressive action…no matter how big or small. Then the “let’s do more” attitude/approach becomes instantly contagious. The result is a drive to preserve that “whatever I touch will turn to gold” MOMENTUM that is felt by you, your co-workers and your organization.
TRIPLE III TIME: The Pain of Change
We haven’t specifically talked about The Pain of Change for a while. It is true that often in TRIPLE III TIME messages there is a hint of a change pain that comes from innovative activity, leadership decisions, communication challenges and/or just plain personal/professional growth. Hopefully the pains should not come as a surprise…but today lets talk about the pain particulars and potential “remedies”.
Are you ready?
First let me be clear that my area of change pain specialization is NOT centered in the lower “back-side” of your body. Second, if your change pains are directly centered in your head…almost migraine-like, then aspirin, Motrin or a visit to your real doctor may be the only answer. However, if The Pain of Change you feel is a unique “hunger-pain” that has many of the following symptoms:
- A sensation that something is missing.
- A consistent need for more
- There is a regular hunger to try something new/different…possibly innovative.
- That you experience a regular, sharp, nagging, disappointment-driven pain…when change doesn’t happen.
- Or The Pain of Change hunger does NOT subside until old mind muscles are pushed to work in new ways.
Dinosaurs became extinct because they couldn’t deal with The Pain of Change! Today more than ever before we all need to accept that personal and professional change is a daily life/work function and you can only remedy it’s pain with a “BRING IT ON!” attitude. Additionally, as part of the cure process one should regularly “LFA” (Lead-Frog-Ahead) of the change pain and position yourself in a new trend-setting area that directs the change pain…rather than be held hostage by it. Finally, I believe the ultimate answer to eliminate The Pain of Change disease…is to become a CHANGE AGENT. As a CHANGE AGENT you become the driver/controller of change in and around you…and creatively The Pain of Change hunger is satisfied.
